Gerunds In Japanese: Beginner's Simplified Guide

Definition: In Latin, a noun derived from a verb and having all case forms except the nominative. In Japanese language, gerunds often associated with "-te" (て),when an acction is still in progress.

Verb ending in:Replace with
-ku く-ite いて
-gu ぐ-ide いで
-mu む-nde んで
-nu ぬ-nde んで
-bu ぶ-nde んで
-su す-shite して
-tsu つ-tte って
-u う-tte って
-ru る-tte って
-kuru くるkite きて
-suru するshite して
  • Note: The verb IKU (Go) is an exception.

Gerunds in Present and Pat tense

Examples:

  • My dad was running

  • 私 の 父 が 実 行 さ れ て い る

  • Watashi no chichi ga jikko sa rete iru

  • He was talking

  • 彼 に 話 し て い た

  • Kare ga hanashite ita

  • I am eating

  • 私 に 食 べ て い る

  • Watashi ni tabete iru

  • My friend is watching tv

  • 私 の 友 人 は テ レ ビ を 見 て れ ま す

  • Watashi no yujin wa terebi o mite iru
