Monk Ryokan

Monk Ryokan (17581831) was a quiet Soto Zen Buddhist monk, who lived as a hermit since he was 18 years old. Some year later, he met his teacher Kokusen Roshi, who tough him many things about life and nature. When Kokusen Roshi died, Ryokan inherited his temple, but he got bored of obligations and duties and he decided to return to his hermit's life.

The following are some of his most beautiful Poems:

You stop to point at the moon in the sky

あなたは、空の月を指すように

停止するしかし指の盲目の

月が輝いている限り、。

The mystery calls and calls:

No moon, no finger,

First blooming in the

Western Paradise, The lotus

has delighted us for ages.

Its white petals are covered

with dew, its jade green leaves

spread out over the pond, and its

pure fragrance perfumes the wind.

Cool and majestic, it raises

from the murky water.

The sun sets behind the mountains,

but I remain in the darkness,

too captivated to leave.
